NOW Broadband and TalkTalk, long the default answer to this question, both now start above £20 a month on their current standard ranges; the genuine under-£20 segment in August 2026 is led by a different, mostly altnet-driven set of providers.

Why NOW Broadband and TalkTalk are no longer the obvious answer

NOW Broadband, owned by Sky, dropped its shorter, more flexible contract options and now starts from £23 a month on a standard 24-month term. TalkTalk's current range starts from £25 a month. Both remain reasonable options at their current prices, but neither is genuinely part of the sub-£20 segment any more, a real shift from their earlier budget positioning that older comparison content across the web, including this page's previous version, had not caught up with.

What broadband under £20 usually looks like now

Every current under-£20 option on this site is an altnet running its own full-fibre network rather than a national Openreach reseller, with the exception of Onestream, which sells over Openreach and is genuinely available to around 94% of UK premises, making it the most realistic under-£20 option for anyone outside a smaller altnet's footprint. Community Fibre, toob, Gigaclear and Trooli are all limited to specific towns, cities or regions, so availability must be checked at the exact address rather than assumed from a postcode area alone.

When paying slightly more is worth it

A deal at £21 to £25 a month can still be better value than one under £20 if it gives a meaningfully higher speed, no scheduled price rise, or a stronger complaints record. • The total cost over the whole minimum term, not just the first monthly figure
• Whether a scheduled annual price rise applies, and how much it adds by year two
• Whether the contract is 12, 18 or 24 months long
• Whether the speed is actually enough for the household
• Whether the exact address is genuinely covered, not just the general town or postcode area

Who should target under-£20 broadband

This category suits one-person homes, small flats, budget-led households and users with light to moderate internet needs. Bigger homes should be more careful, because saving a few pounds a month is rarely worth it if the connection becomes frustrating every evening, and several of the genuinely cheapest current options have limited geographic coverage that rules them out for most UK addresses regardless of price.
