Head-to-head
TalkTalk sells full fibre over Openreach from £25 a month on a 24-month contract; Virgin Media runs its own cable network from £23.
TalkTalk sells full fibre over Openreach from £25 a month on a 24-month contract; Virgin Media runs its own cable network from £23.99 a month for M125 (both checked on the providers' own sites in October 2026). Virgin Media is faster at the top end and has a better Ofcom complaints record; TalkTalk reaches far more homes. Both add £4 a month each April.
If Virgin Media reaches your address, it is the stronger choice for most homes: faster top speeds, the Hub 5X router as standard and an Ofcom complaints record at or below the industry average, against TalkTalk's position as the most complained-about broadband provider in Ofcom's Q1 2026 report. TalkTalk is the practical choice where Virgin isn't available (it reaches far more homes) or where its full fibre price at your address is clearly lower over the whole contract.
These signals are shown separately because they measure different things. Ofcom complaints record serious escalations, surveys measure experiences across a sample, and public reviews reflect self-selecting recent sentiment. We never combine them into an invented trust score.

TalkTalk uses Openreach, so it is available wherever Openreach full fibre reaches, around 96% of premises for its broadband range. Virgin Media runs its own network, reaching around 52% of UK premises. Check Virgin's postcode checker first: if it can't serve you, the choice is made.
TalkTalk's full fibre starts at £25 a month for Full Fibre 150, with Full Fibre 500 at £30 and Full Fibre 900 at £36, all on 24-month contracts with no setup fee. Virgin Media lists M125 (average 132 Mbps) from £23.99 a month, M500 from £27.99 and Gigabit from £29.99, as from-prices for new customers; its contracts are 18 months and the exact term is shown in the basket.
Both now use a flat pounds-and-pence rise each April. TalkTalk's Full Fibre 150 goes from £25 to £29 from April 2027, then rises again in April 2028. Virgin Media adds £4 a month each April for customers who joined after 2 October 2025. Our price-rise checker works out your own figure from the month you signed up.
TalkTalk's fastest package is Full Fibre 900. Virgin Media's Gigabit tier averages 1,130 Mbps, the fastest widely available in the UK. For most households either is plenty; the top tier matters for large homes with many heavy users at once.
Virgin Media includes the Hub 5X, a gigabit-capable router, across its range. TalkTalk's standard router is Wi-Fi 5, a generation behind what many rivals now include, with a paid mesh add-on (Total Home Wi-Fi) for larger homes.
Ofcom's Q1 2026 report named TalkTalk the most complained-about broadband provider, at around 10 complaints per 100,000 customers against an industry average of 6, its third quarter running at the top. Ofcom's data has consistently placed Virgin Media at or below the industry average. Both have very low Trustpilot scores (TalkTalk 1.5, Virgin Media 1.4), which skew towards people who had a problem.
Switching between two Openreach providers uses One Touch Switch. Virgin Media is on a separate network, so moving to or from it never uses One Touch Switch: keep your old service running until the new line works, and cancel it yourself.
TalkTalk and Virgin Media are two of the most searched-for comparisons in UK broadband, and they are built on completely different networks. TalkTalk resells full fibre over Openreach, the network shared with BT, Sky and Plusnet. Virgin Media runs its own cable and fibre network, separate from Openreach, which reaches around half of UK homes.
That network difference decides most of the comparison: whether Virgin can serve your address at all, how fast the top tier goes, and how switching works. Prices in this comparison come from each provider's own website (TalkTalk checked 18 October 2026, Virgin Media 21 October 2026), and complaints figures from Ofcom.
Choose Virgin Media if it reaches your address and you want the fastest widely available speeds (up to 1,130 Mbps), a gigabit-capable router included as standard and a provider Ofcom's data puts at or below the industry average for complaints.
Choose TalkTalk if Virgin Media doesn't serve your home, or if TalkTalk's full fibre price at your address is clearly lower over the whole 24 months. Go in knowing TalkTalk topped Ofcom's complaints table for broadband in its Q1 2026 report, and that its standard router is Wi-Fi 5.
Both add a flat £4 a month each April for new customers, so compare the full contract cost, not the first month's price.
