27%

of York's 90,992 homes use full fibre, though 85.9% could get it (and 90.7% can get gigabit, counting Virgin Media cable). Of the homes that can, 32% have switched.

If your street has full fibre and you are still on an old copper line, you may be paying the same for a much slower service.

First row: Ofcom’s figure for the City of York Council area (90,992 homes). District rows: our average across each district’s residential postcodes. Both from Ofcom Connected Nations 2025, published under the Open Government Licence. Gigabit counts full fibre and Virgin Media’s gigabit cable. Area figures are not an address check.

Which broadband networks are in York?

Providers sell packages; networks own the cables. Which network reaches your door decides what you can buy.
  • Openreach

    Most of the city

The network behind BT, Sky, EE, TalkTalk, Plusnet, Vodafone and NOW, carrying both full fibre and older part-fibre lines. Its fibre checker shows whether full fibre is available, coming or planned at your address.

  • CityFibre

    Across the city

CityFibre said in March 2023 that it was extending its York rollout into Clifton Moor, Fulford, parts of Huntington and the city centre, aiming to reach almost every home and business by the end of 2024. It is wholesale only: Vodafone, TalkTalk, Zen, toob and others sell on it.

  • Virgin Media

    Gigabit cable

Virgin Media sells over its own cable network, which Ofcom counts as gigabit-capable. Its postcode checker shows whether your address is covered.

Your situation

Broadband for flats, students, renters and home workers in York

  • Inside the city walls

In YO1, 17.8% of homes cannot get 30 Mbps (Ofcom, July 2025). Fastr Broadband is building its own full fibre network inside the walls, and CityFibre and Openreach are reaching more of the centre. Check every network with your full address, and ask the building owner or managing agent which ones already serve a converted or listed building.

Broadband inside York’s city walls (YO1)
  • Students

The University of York is at Heslington (YO10), where 87.7% of homes can get gigabit broadband, and York St John is just outside the walls by the Minster. A 24-month contract rarely suits a one-year tenancy: compare 12-month or rolling plans.

    Student broadband guide
  • Renting and shared houses

Agree who holds the contract before ordering: the account holder is liable for the whole term. A 12-month or rolling plan suits a short tenancy better than 24 months, even at a slightly higher monthly price. Check the landlord allows a new install if one is needed.

  • Working from home

Video calls and cloud uploads depend on upload speed, which varies more between packages than download speed does. Compare the upload figure each provider states for your address, and choose 100 Mbps or more if several people work or study at home.

Outages

Is the internet down in York?

Before calling, five checks tell you whether it is your line, your home or a wider fault.
  1. 1

    Check your provider’s status page

Links on the right. A known fault in your area means engineers are already on it.

  2. 2

    Restart the router

Switch it off at the wall for a minute. Wait five minutes for the lights to settle.

  3. 3

    Try a cable

Plug a laptop straight into the router. If that works, the problem is Wi-Fi, not the line.

  4. 4

    Check the lights

A red or orange broadband light usually means no signal from the network.

  5. 5

Report it and note the time

If service is out for more than two full working days after you report it, Ofcom’s automatic compensation scheme pays the providers that have signed up.

The city-centre gap

Why is broadband worse in York city centre?

Across York, 90.7% of homes can get gigabit broadband. In the city centre (YO1) it is 45.9%, and 17.8% of homes cannot get 30 Mbps (Ofcom, July 2025).

York’s centre is a medieval walled city of listed buildings and narrow streets in a conservation area. Engineers have to plan around historic fabric, conservation rules, archaeology and the tourist season, so every network has been slower to reach it, and many older buildings are split into flats that need the owner’s agreement before they can be wired.

It is the same in every big city we cover. By our analysis of Ofcom’s figures, gigabit coverage in the central district is 48.1% in Sheffield (S1), 59.2% in Leeds (LS1), 62.2% in Liverpool (L1), 66.6% in Manchester (M1), 71.2% in Glasgow (G1), 71.8% in Edinburgh (EH1), 72% in Bristol (BS1), 77.4% in Birmingham (B1). If you live in a city-centre block, ask the managing agent which networks serve the building before you compare deals.
